Ganghwa Island is located near the South Korea’s capital city, Seoul. And It is situated in the northwestern part of South Korea.

The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. So It is easily accessible from Seoul

Every vacation, my grandsons attend the teenager camp where is held in the Island. So I visit there to bring them twice a year with my daughter. So I want to introduce my  favorite place, Ganghwa Island to you!

There is a popular destination due to its historical sites, natural beauty, and so on. And there are many restaurants where is famous for locals.

Transportation to go to Ganghwa Island

Ganghwa Island is accessible by car, bus from Seoul.

You can get there in 2 hours by driving a car. But if you use the public transportation, you have to use subway & bus. And it take about 2 hours 30 minutes.

  • Jeondeungsa Temple: One of Korea’s oldest Buddhist temples(381 AD), Jeondeungsa is known for its cultural and spiritual significance.
    The temple complex is beautiful and offers insights into Korean Buddhism.
  • Chojijin Fortress:  A defensive position installed in Joseon Dynasty(1392~1910) in the 17th century. Located on the northern coast, Chojijin Fortress features well-preserved walls and historical artifacts.
  • Deokjinjin Fort: It is the key point of the outer fortress that guarded the Ganghwa Strait during the Goryeo Dynasty(918-1392). This historical fort displays old cannons and wartime relics.
  • Gwangseongbo Fortress: Explore this historic fortress that guarded the northern borders of the Joseon Dynasty(1392~1910). The views from the walls are very beautiful.
  • Ganghwa History Museum: This museum offers exhibitions and artifacts that provide a comprehensive overview of Ganghwa Island’s history, culture, and people.
  • Dolmen Sites: Ganghwa Island is home to several dolmen sites, UNESCO World Heritage sites that are ancient megalithic tombs.

Jeondeungsa Temple in Ganghwa Island

Among the attractive sites in Ganghwa Island, I recommend a visit to Jeondeungsa Temple(https://www.jeondeungsa.org/). The Temple is my favorite place. Visitors can appreciate the beauty of the temple buildings and the surrounding natural landscape. Jeondeungsa Temple is a Buddhist temple with a deep historical and cultural significance.

Here’s some information about Jeondeungsa Temple:

  • Historical Significance: Jeondeungsa Temple is famous for housing the “Jikji(a collection of Buddhist teachings)”, the oldest existing book printed with movable metal type, which predates Gutenberg’s press by about 78 years.
  • Buddhist Heritage: Jeondeungsa Temple has a long history dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty(918-1392). The temple complex includes various halls, pagodas, and cultural artifacts.
  • Temple Architecture: The architecture of Jeondeungsa showcases traditional Korean temple design with its intricate wooden structures, colorful artwork, and serene atmosphere.
  • Scenic Views: The temple is located in a picturesque setting, surrounded by nature and offering views of the sea and the landscape of Ganghwado. The tranquil environment makes it a peaceful place for reflection and relaxation.

Enjoy Local Cuisine_Ganghwa Island

Ganghwa Island is famous for its blue crab dishes. I will introduce locals of a soy sauce crab restaurant and a seafood ‘kalguksu’ restaurant made with seafood from Ganghwa Island. Kalguksu is a popular Korean noodle dish. The name “kalguksu” translates to “knife noodles” in English, referring to the handmade, knife-cut wheat flour noodles that are a defining feature of the dish. Korean commonly enjoy it in South Korea, especially during colder months, as it provides warmth and a hearty meal. Restaurant conditions are subject to change, so please check in advance before going.

  • Mokhyang:  This is a soy sauce crab restaurant, which is famous for its grilled fish and soy sauce crab set meal(“Gejang set” called in Korean), and the price is about 20$ per one person. The address is Incheon, Ganghwa-gun, Gilsang-myeon, Seondu-ri, 1040.(Tel: 82-032-937-7856)
  • Beteojineun jib: The restaurant with the filling is a kalguksu restaurant, and if you order kalguksu, barley rice is served as an appetizer. The taste is good and the price is about 20$ per one person. The address is 481-17 Sagi-ri, Hwado-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon.(Tel: 82-032-937-9674)
